The Turkey with a Twist
A paper ring needs a personality. Could a twist turn it into a turkey?
LOOK CLOSELY
What can a twist do?
Watch a strip curl. What might your turkey do with a twist like that?
Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
A paper-plate ring and paper head prepared by a grown-up, paint sticks, glue, paper feathers or craft feathers, and chenille stems or paper strips.
For your grown-up: A grown-up cuts the ring, punches holes, and folds wire ends inward. Use paper strips instead of stems for younger children.
Let’s see what happens.
- Choose colors and add a face to your turkey head. Give it a surprising expression.
- Arrange feathers around the plate ring. Try spreading them out or bunching them before gluing.
- Ask a grown-up to prepare two holes. Twist chenille stems to attach feet, or glue folded paper-strip feet.
- Move the feet into different poses. What is your turkey about to do?
Your ideas belong here too.
Show a twist with your hands. Which way should the feet point?
Tell me about your making.
Which materials did you join? What helped them stay together?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
