The Turkey with a Twist

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: TwistTo twist is to turn something around itself or around another thing.

Elements of Art focus: Form. Twist strands and change a paper creature’s pose. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“A paper ring needs a personality. Could a twist turn it into a turkey?”

Our little purpose: Arrange feathers and manipulate feet to suggest a turkey pose.

Gather a little magic

A paper-plate ring and paper head prepared by a grown-up, paint sticks, glue, paper feathers or craft feathers, and chenille stems or paper strips.

For your grown-up: A grown-up cuts the ring, punches holes, and folds wire ends inward. Use paper strips instead of stems for younger children.

Make it yours

  1. Choose colors and add a face to your turkey head. Give it a surprising expression.
  2. Arrange feathers around the plate ring. Try spreading them out or bunching them before gluing.
  3. Ask a grown-up to prepare two holes. Twist chenille stems to attach feet, or glue folded paper-strip feet.
  4. Move the feet into different poses. What is your turkey about to do?

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child changes an arrangement or points out a twist or pose.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: Use pre-cut paper-strip feet; a grown-up handles holes and stem ends.

A little more: Compare two poses and tell what the turkey might do next.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
