FOR EDUCATORS & CURIOUS GROWN-UPS

The learning underneath.

Standards guide the artistic actions. The seven Elements of Art are visual ideas we revisit through those actions, one or two at a time.

Playful invitations, with thoughtful planning behind them.

Preschool / TK foundations

The plans use California’s revised Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations for ages three to five and a half. Adapt for each child rather than treating a lesson as a developmental checklist.

The Visual Arts connections used here are summarized below:

1.2
Talking or otherwise communicating about art and its features.
1.3
Exploring drawn or painted lines and curves.
1.4
Shaping dough or clay.
1.5
Working with varied art materials.
1.6
Using art vocabulary in communication.
1.7
Developing control when using art tools.
1.8
Trying color mixtures and blends.
1.9
Making two- or three-dimensional representations.

A bridge to kindergarten

Kindergarten standards are listed separately as possible next steps. They are not requirements for younger children.

K.VA:Cr1.1
Exploring art materials through imaginative play.
K.VA:Cr2.1
Developing artmaking skills through experiments.
K.VA:Cr3
Explaining how artwork is being made.

What counts as noticing?

A child might point, arrange, try again, use a home language, gesture, or tell a story. Record an observable choice or action. A finished piece that looks like an adult example is not the goal.

Each plan’s “Look what you discovered” section gives a project-specific observation. Connections reflect the activity as offered, not a complete assessment or an official endorsement.
