Can Your Skeleton Strike a Pose?
How can a still picture look as if it is dancing?
LOOK CLOSELY
Can a picture look like it moves?
Try the pose with your own body. Which joint would you bend or turn?
Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
Dark paper, white paper strips or cotton swabs, a drawn or printed skull, glue, patterned paper scraps, and crayons.
For your grown-up: A grown-up prepares short pieces. Paper strips are an alternative to cotton swabs. This is a playful collage, not an exact anatomy model.
Let’s see what happens.
- Try a comfortable arm pose and notice where your elbow bends.
- Arrange white strips as a spine, ribs, arms, and legs. Leave a bend where you want a joint.
- Move your pieces into a new pose before gluing. Compare the two ideas.
- Attach a skull and invent paper clothes or accessories. Tell the story of your dancing character.
Your ideas belong here too.
Where should we bend the arm to make a wave? Describe a pose for me to try.
Tell me about your making.
What did you move to change the pose?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
