LITTLE LESSON 13 · PRESCHOOL · TK · EARLY K

Where Did the Airplane Go?

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: DirectionDirection is the way something points or moves.

Elements of Art focus: Line & space. Follow lines through the space behind a plane. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“Our airplane has flown away. Can a painted trail show us which way it went?”

Our little purpose: Place a flyer and make a trail that communicates direction.

Gather a little magic

Paper, crayons, airplane stickers or paper airplane shapes, washable paint, a dropper, and a smooth plastic ruler or card.

For your grown-up: A grown-up helps with the dropper and smooth-edged tool. This painted trail is an art way to suggest movement.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. Draw a sky with places your imaginary flyer could visit.
  2. Arrange a plane and point the way it faces. Leave space behind it for a trail.
  3. Put a small paint drop behind the plane. Practice dragging a smooth card through a drop on spare paper.
  4. Pull a trail away from the back of your plane. Try a new trail on another sheet and compare your choices.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child points to the nose or explains which way the flyer is going.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: A grown-up helps hold the plane while the child directs the trail.

A little more: Try a second orientation and compare the trails.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
