The Painting Made by AIR
Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.
Elements of Art focus: Line. Notice the paint trail the breeze leaves behind. Meet the seven art ideas →
Let’s wonder!
“Can air move paint without a brush touching it?”
Our little purpose: Change fan direction and notice how paint moves.
Gather a little magic
Paper in a tray, thin washable watercolor, a dropper or brush, and a hand fan or folded paper.
For your grown-up: Use a hand fan instead of blowing through a straw. Keep paint away from mouths and eyes; a grown-up handles setup.
Make it yours

- Place a small puddle of thin paint on paper in a tray.
- Predict where it will travel. Fan gently from one side and watch.
- Try a different direction or distance. Add another color and see where the paths meet.
- Let it dry. What could the moving marks become? Add details if you want.
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
Look what you discovered
Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”
Notice: The child compares two paint trails after changing how they fan.
Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.
Every idea belongs
A little support: A grown-up holds the tray; offer a large fan or let the child direct a helper.
A little more: Change only one variable—direction or distance—and compare.
No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
