The Painting Made by AIR
Can air move paint without a brush touching it?
LOOK CLOSELY
Which way will the paint go?
Point where you think the paint will travel. What could you change if it goes another way?
Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
Paper in a tray, thin washable watercolor, a dropper or brush, and a hand fan or folded paper.
For your grown-up: Use a hand fan instead of blowing through a straw. Keep paint away from mouths and eyes; a grown-up handles setup.
Let’s see what happens.
- Place a small puddle of thin paint on paper in a tray.
- Predict where it will travel. Fan gently from one side and watch.
- Try a different direction or distance. Add another color and see where the paths meet.
- Let it dry. What could the moving marks become? Add details if you want.
Your ideas belong here too.
Point to where you think the paint will go. How could we make it change direction?
Tell me about your making.
What changed when the air came from a different direction?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
