Butterfly Mystery
What will appear when we fold, press, and open?
LOOK CLOSELY
What is hiding in the fold?
Make a guess before you open the paper. What might surprise you?
Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
Paper, washable paint, and a covered work surface.
For your grown-up: Use small amounts of washable paint. Real paint transfers may not match perfectly, and that is part of the discovery.
Let’s see what happens.
- Fold your paper in half, then open it.
- Put a few small paint marks on one side near the fold. Predict what might appear on the other side.
- Fold, press gently, then open for the reveal.
- Look for matching marks. Could this become a butterfly—or something entirely different? Add your own details.
Your ideas belong here too.
Before we open it, where do you think the paint will appear? What does the revealed shape remind you of?
Tell me about your making.
Which parts match? Which parts look different?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
