Butterfly Mystery
Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.
Elements of Art focus: Shape & space. Explore shapes on both sides of a fold. Meet the seven art ideas →
Let’s wonder!
“What will appear when we fold, press, and open?”
Our little purpose: Predict, fold, and notice marks that appear across a fold.
Gather a little magic
Paper, washable paint, and a covered work surface.
For your grown-up: Use small amounts of washable paint. Real paint transfers may not match perfectly, and that is part of the discovery.
Make it yours
Wonder together · 2–3 min Try & make · 12–20 min Share & tidy · 3–6 min
- Fold your paper in half, then open it.
- Put a few small paint marks on one side near the fold. Predict what might appear on the other side.
- Fold, press gently, then open for the reveal.
- Look for matching marks. Could this become a butterfly—or something entirely different? Add your own details.
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
Look what you discovered
Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”
Notice: The child points to corresponding marks or comments on a reveal.
Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.
Every idea belongs
A little support: Pre-crease the paper and help press while the child chooses the marks.
A little more: Ask which marks came from the fold and which were added afterward.
No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
