LITTLE LESSON 12 · PRESCHOOL · TK · EARLY K

How Do You Paint a Fuzzy Bird?

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: StampTo stamp is to press a tool onto a surface and lift it to leave a mark.

Elements of Art focus: Texture. Compare the surface marks made by different tools. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“These birds need feathers. Can different tools make different-looking fluff?”

Our little purpose: Test stamp tools and choose marks for a bird or invented creature.

Gather a little magic

Paper, washable paint, two or more child-safe texture stampers or sponges, glue, precut paper eyes and triangle beaks, and a marker.

For your grown-up: Use age-appropriate tools and a thin layer of paint. A grown-up prepares paper features; keep loose pieces away from mouths.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. Look at the tools and predict which mark each will leave. Try them on spare paper.
  2. Dip lightly, tap off extra paint, stamp, and lift. Repeat marks to grow a bird body.
  3. Try a different tool for another bird. Choose your own colors and compare the textures.
  4. When dry, add paper eyes and a beak. Wings, nests, and legs are your choice.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child connects a tool with its mark or changes tools intentionally.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: Provide a large easy-grip stamp and stabilize the paper.

A little more: Compare two tool prints and describe how their textures differ.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
