LITTLE LESSON 08 · PRESCHOOL · TK · EARLY K

Build a Clay Creature and Its World

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: FormA form has three dimensions: height, width, and depth. You can look around it.

Elements of Art focus: Form. Roll, squash, join, and turn forms to explore a sculpture. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“Who might live in this little world? What would it need?”

Our little purpose: Invent a clay creature, build a small place for it, and change either one as the story unfolds.

Gather a little magic

Child-appropriate modeling clay or dough, a mat, scrap cardboard for a base, and optional large paper or fabric scraps. A blunt modeling tool can help.

For your grown-up: Choose material labeled for the child’s age and check ingredients for allergies. Keep clay and dough out of mouths; wash hands afterward.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. Squeeze, roll, flatten, or pinch the clay. Notice the forms your hands make.
  2. Join forms into a creature. Turn it around; what does it need or like?
  3. Build a tiny place for it on cardboard: perhaps a shelter, path, pond, hill, or something no one has seen.
  4. Move your creature through its world. If it tips over or cannot reach somewhere, change the creature or world and try again.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child changes a form or habitat after imagining how the creature uses it.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: Use soft dough and large pieces; forming a single lump is welcome.

A little more: Try a different base, then describe whether the creature stands or rests.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
