Build a Clay Creature and Its World
Who might live in this little world? What would it need?

Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
Child-appropriate modeling clay or dough, a mat, scrap cardboard for a base, and optional large paper or fabric scraps. A blunt modeling tool can help.
For your grown-up: Choose material labeled for the child’s age and check ingredients for allergies. Keep clay and dough out of mouths; wash hands afterward.
Let’s see what happens.
- Squeeze, roll, flatten, or pinch the clay. What forms can your hands make?
- Invent a creature. Give it a feature that tells us something about what it likes or needs.
- Make a tiny place for it on a cardboard base. Could it rest, hide, cross, climb, or find something there?
- Move your creature through its world. If it tips over or cannot reach a place, change the creature or the world and try again.
Your ideas belong here too.
Look at the sheep’s little world. Where should a new creature go first: the pond or the shelter? What should we add so it can get there? Point, vote, or tell me.
Tell me about your making.
What changed after your creature tried to explore its world?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
