The Secret Picture Under the Paper

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: RubbingA rubbing is a picture made by rubbing a drawing tool over paper covering a textured surface.

Elements of Art focus: Texture & value. Compare texture marks that look lighter or darker. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“The paper looks blank. Can a crayon find the bumps hiding underneath?”

Our little purpose: Reveal an underlying texture by rubbing across paper.

Gather a little magic

Thin paper, crayons, and large, flat textured surfaces such as corrugated cardboard.

For your grown-up: A grown-up selects clean, blunt, stable surfaces. Avoid sharp objects and small loose items.

Make it yours

  1. Feel a safe surface and predict what marks it might make.
  2. Cover it with paper. Hold the paper still and rub with the side of a crayon.
  3. Compare a gentle rub with a firmer one. Try another texture alongside it.
  4. Use the revealed marks in an imaginary map, creature, or place.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child connects a rubbing with its surface or compares two marks.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: Tape the paper lightly in place and offer a thick crayon held sideways.

A little more: Compare gentle and firmer rubbings of the same surface.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
