The Monster That Isn’t Finished

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: TextureTexture is how a surface feels—or looks like it might feel.

Let’s wonder!

“Something is missing from this monster. What could it need?”

Our little purpose: Compare two surfaces and choose textures for an invented monster.

Gather a little magic

Paper, crayons, glue, and large scraps of textured paper or fabric.

For your grown-up: A grown-up can help cut materials. Keep small loose pieces away from younger children.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. Imagine a monster. Draw or arrange a body any way you like.
  2. Explore your scraps. Which feel smooth, bumpy, soft, or rough?
  3. Choose textures for your monster. Add, move, or swap pieces until something surprises you.
  4. Step inside its world: if you were this monster, what would those textures help you do?

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child points to, describes, or deliberately chooses different textures.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: Offer two large scraps; invite touching with a tool or simply looking.

A little more: Ask how a chosen texture could help the monster in its imagined home.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
