LITTLE LESSON 10 · PRESCHOOL · TK · EARLY K

The Ice Cream Painting That Drinks Water

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: AbsorbAbsorb means to take liquid in.

Elements of Art focus: Color. Follow color through a connected salt path. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“Can a line of salt carry color through an imaginary ice cream?”

Our little purpose: Watch a small drop travel along a salt-and-glue picture.

Gather a little magic

Sturdy paper in a tray, white school glue, table salt, liquid watercolor, and a dropper or brush.

For your grown-up: This ice cream is art, not food. Keep salt, glue, and paint out of mouths and eyes. A grown-up manages loose salt. Color moves through spaces between salt grains, and some salt dissolves; compare with paper absorbing water.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. Draw an imaginary ice cream with glue. Choose your own scoops, cone, and surprising toppings.
  2. Sprinkle salt over the glue and tip the extra into the tray.
  3. Predict what a tiny drop of color will do. Touch it to the salt and watch the color travel through the tiny spaces.
  4. Try another drop nearby. Notice where colors meet, then leave the painting flat to dry.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child notices where color moves, meets, or stops.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: A grown-up handles salt and glue; the child chooses the drop location.

A little more: Compare connected salt paths with a gap and describe the difference.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
