LITTLE LESSON 06 · PRESCHOOL · TK · EARLY K

Can Paint Float?

Ages 3–6 · About 20–30 minutes of active making · Follow the child’s pace

Allow extra drying time for paint or glue. Children can pause and return.

Wonder Word: MarbleTo marble means to make flowing, swirly patterns like the patterns in some stone.

Elements of Art focus: Color & line. Move color into flowing lines and lift a print. Meet the seven art ideas →

Let’s wonder!

“Will every paint stay on top of water? Let’s find out, then make swirls we can print.”

Our little purpose: Explore a prepared marbling surface and lift a personal print.

Gather a little magic

Two shallow trays, water, washable watercolor, child-appropriate water-based marbling paint used as labeled, paper, and a mixing stick.

For your grown-up: A grown-up chooses an age-appropriate water-based marbling kit and follows its setup and disposal directions. Ordinary paint may mix into water rather than float; avoid solvent-based paints.

Make it yours

Wonder together · 2–3 min   Try & make · 12–20 min   Share & tidy · 3–6 min

  1. With a grown-up, place a drop of washable watercolor in plain water. Notice whether it spreads, mixes, or sinks.
  2. Prepare the marbling tray exactly as the marbling paint’s label directs. Predict how this paint will behave.
  3. Add a few colors and gently draw a stick through them. Leave some swirls untouched.
  4. Lay paper on the surface as directed, lift it, and dry it flat. Keep the print or fold the dry paper into a fan.

“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”

Look what you discovered

Ask: “What did you choose? What changed? What would you try next?”

Notice: The child notices how a swirl or color choice appears on the print.

Listen, watch, or accept pointing and home-language responses. Notice the process, not resemblance to an example.

Every idea belongs

A little support: A grown-up manages the tray and lift; offer two colors to choose from.

A little more: Compare a gentle swirl with an untouched area before lifting.

No supplies today? The child can make choices, predict, and direct a grown-up.
