Can a Line Do a Dance?
A zigzag, a wiggle, a zigzag… what could come next?
LOOK CLOSELY
What comes next?
Follow the marks with your finger. Would your next line wiggle, jump, or do something else?
Video coming soon. Explore the activity below.
Gather what you need
Paper and crayons or markers.
For your grown-up: Use age-appropriate drawing materials. Children can point, gesture, or describe a pattern instead of drawing.
Let’s see what happens.
- Make a line in the air with your finger. Let it travel onto paper.
- Choose two or three kinds of marks and repeat them in your own order.
- Try repeating colors, changing the size, or leaving pauses between marks.
- Let your pattern travel around the page. Give your line dance a name.
Your ideas belong here too.
Make a sound for each kind of line. Help me decide which mark comes next.
Tell me about your making.
What repeats in your picture? Where did you change the pattern?
What would you try next?
“I’ll show you how I did mine. Yours doesn’t have to look like mine.”
